Law firm predicts divorce spike in 2010 following stream of New Year enquiries
Mace & Jones legal 500 top tier rated family law team says all its three offices in Cheshire, Manchester and Liverpool are experiencing a spike in divorce enquiries.
Family Law partner Tina Dunn said the recession had taken a heavy toll on relationships and the new year is now being seen by many couples as a chance for a fresh start.
“The economic downturn and an expensive Christmas have put huge pressure on unhappy marriages,” she said. “Although financial problems may not be the cause of the relationship problems they can become a lightening rod for more rows and more disagreements. Moreover the Christmas period can force people together, away from the distraction of work, exposing disfunctional relationships and fuelling more arguments. But critically it would seem that our clients are optimistic about an economic recovery in 2010 which they hope will enable them to sell their assets and their homes and realise better equity returns. The drop in asset values caused by the recession has definitely stalled divorces. 2010 however with its promise of economic recovery is likely to see more couples take decisive action to end unhappy marriages.”
