Scam targets Macclesfield business
Businesses have been warned of a suspected scam where a business in Macclesfield was targeted by a cold caller pretending to be a police officer and asking for money.
The man who called claimed to be call Mark Shepherd, from Cheshire Police. He asked the firm to sponsor a company named Prevent by buying advertising space.
He claimed an advert would go inside a publication given out in schools.
Cheshire Police have warned this week that even if this company does exist, they do not work with it at all.
PC Bryan Dutton said: “We do not work with this company and aren’t aware of them working with schools in Cheshire. We also do not support or affiliate ourselves to any companies which cold call businesses or members of the public. If you receive a call requesting money and you cannot verify who they are then we would advise you don’t give out any bank details, funds or personal details.”
Any suspicious calls can be reported to Trading Standards or Action Fraud at / www.actionfraud.police.uk/ .
