LEP Chair tracks region’s economic progress with Prime Minister

By on February 5, 2019

The Chair of the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has joined business leaders from England’s LEP network to meet with the Prime Minister and track progress on their work to boost economic growth for communities across the country.

Christine Gaskell CBE joined business leaders representing each of the LEPs across England to brief the Prime Minister on the development of their Local Industrial Strategies, which will see LEPs work closely with government to unlock growth.

The meeting took place in the same week that Cheshire and Warrington launched its Local Industrial Strategy Engagement Programme in Crewe. The region is one of the early leaders in developing a robust evidence base which highlights potential issues that may hinder growth aspirations.

The LEP is set to host two further engagement sessions with local businesses and other key stakeholders over the coming months to discuss its Local Industrial Strategy.

The Prime Minister, Theresa May said: “Local Enterprise Partnerships have a vital role to play in delivering our modern Industrial Strategy. Working closely with government, their leadership is helping make sure businesses thrive as we prepare to leave the European Union.

“I was pleased to hear directly from LEP representatives how they are bringing together the local business community, universities and other partners to design long-term, ambitious plans tailored to the strengths and needs of their areas.

“Using their unique insight and expertise to co-develop Local Industrial Strategies, LEPs are boosting economic growth, securing jobs and delivering prosperity – making sure that no community is left behind.”

Chair of the Cheshire and Warrington LEP, Christine Gaskell CBE, said: “The LEP network were delighted to meet with the Prime Minister and report the potential impact that Local Industrial Strategies will have on economic growth and productivity in towns and cities across England. It was also very pleasing to confirm to the Prime Minister that we are all on target to deliver these ambitious targets on schedule.

“Local Enterprise Partnerships are shaped to boost economic growth and productivity and maximise on each region’s unique expertise and strengths. This meeting also provided the opportunity to discuss how each region is preparing for the UK’s imminent departure from the European Union, and understand how businesses are responding to this.

“Over the coming weeks we’re looking forward to consulting with businesses and key stakeholders on the plans outlined in our Local Industrial Strategy, which will help to inform our developing strategy and ensure we’re moving forward with a collective approach.”
