Thousands of women gathered at Tatton Park, Knutsford, at the weekend, to jog or walk their way around a 5K or 10K course.

Cancer Research originally urged: “Enter now and be one of 600 women who will walk, jog or run 10k to help us smash our fundraising target of £20,500 for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.”

However after 6,000 women congregated in Tatton Park despite bad weather, race organisers radically revised their estimates saying that they now believe more than £400,000 was raised at Tatton, with the exact figures due to be revealed over the coming months.

In addition to cash donations, Race For Life event manager for Tatton Park, Nelson Laurencia, revealed that just under 1,000 bags, valued at £17,000, were handed in to donation stations during the event. These bags will all be sent to local Cancer Research UK shops.

Due to the excellent turnout, Cancer Research was keen to ensure that they had a strong team in place to offer help and support, with Nelson Laurencia explaining: “On the day we only had four members of staff; however, we did have over 50 volunteers making sure the event was safe and fun for all our participants and spectators. Our volunteers are vital to make the event (which takes approximately nine months to organise) happen!”

Race For Life was sponsored by Real Radio and Drivetime presenters Scott and Glen were unstinting in their praise for the event, with Scott saying: "While there is a deeply serious, personal and often sad reason motivating the women and girls who take part in these events, the passion, enthusiasm and fun they put into the day is quite frankly, unsurpassed. I had a fantastic day and it feels great to have been a part of such a brilliant event."

Glen added; "Fundraising and charities have for so long has been a very serious affair but The Race For Life is an incredible event and really encapsulates the spirit of people on a mission to do good and raise the profile of such a dreadful disease. We, and Real Radio, are proud to be associated with it."

Donations are still being counted and sponsorship payments made, but organisers seem quietly confident promising they will reveal the final figure to the Knutsford Times over the coming months. Watch this space...
