A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “NATS (National Air Traffic Services) has confirmed overnight that the volcano eruption has strengthened and a new ash cloud is drifting towards Britain affecting UK airspace.
“Based on the overnight update from NATS, we do not expect Manchester Airport to open until 13:00 today at the earliest.  Unfortunately, the latest forecasts indicate that a further deterioration in conditions is likely.
“The next update from NATS is expected at 07:00 this morning.  Until we receive this information, it is absolutely essential that people contact their airline before travelling to the airport because even if Manchester Airport is able to reopen today, schedules will take a several days to return to normal.
“The situation is changing rapidly and we fully appreciate the distress that this is causing for our passengers and staff.  We would like to thank them all for their continued patience and understanding since this situation began on Thursday.”
