Girlguiding North West England hosts Dragon Boat Regatta at Tatton Park

By on July 7, 2010

Over 10 teams took part in racing, improving their times throughout the day, with levels of excitement and competition running high.

Tatton Park Scout Campsite was taken over for the day, with activities such as lantern making, grass skiing, decorative knotting and a gladiator challenge capturing people’s imagination between races. The day culminated in a fiercely fought final  with the team from Congleton, “Fei Loong” emerging as the eventual winners, with only half a second difference between the top three teams!

All the competitors received a commemorative badge with the winners receiving a wooden tree trunk carved with the official event mascot – a pink dragon named Idris. Each team was themed and in fancy dress, with some very creative outfits – the prize for “best dressed team” went to  a team from Blackpool, “Women in Black”.  “The Dolly Mixtures” from Wilmslow were crowned “Dragon Boaters of the Rear 2010” and received a wooden spoon award for their valiant efforts!

The event took many months of organisation by a team of dedicated leaders from across  North West England.  It would not have taken place without vital sponsorship from the RPS Group.   A key member of the organising team, Rhonda Larkin said, “Everyone had a great day, the weather was kind to us and the racing was fiercely competitive.  Our thanks go to 4 Dragons Ltd and the Amathus Dragon Boat Club at Liverpool, for organising such a super competition.

Sue Taylor, County Commissioner for Cheshire Border and member of the winning team commented, “It was a great day, all the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  Girlguiding is about giving girls and young women opportunities to try new things that they would not otherwise have an opportunity to do.”

Nick Taylor, Operational Director RPS Group, said “We are delighted to have provided support for this event and in the long term for the Cheshire Guide and Scout Sailing Centre based at Tatton Park (an RYA recognised Sailing Centre).  The sailing centre provides water activities for  Girlguiding members from all over Cheshire and is open to all  members in the UK.
