A “Great Place” to be in Longridge.
New play area opened at Great Places’ Longridge and Shaw Heath neighbourhood. Children of Longridge and Shaw Heath have a transformed play area to enjoy thanks to organisations working together.
Cheshire East Council joined forces with local landlord Great Places Housing Group and residents’ group Community Spirit to refurbish a worn-out facility with a new slide, climbing frame, hoppers and other equipment.
Now pupils and staff from Manor Park Primary School plus experts from Tatton Park will enhance the play area with landscaping, plants and willow weaving.
Dignitaries including deputy mayor Cllr Stewart Gardiner gathered to officially open the play area on council land at the edge of St John’s Woodland on Southfields, developed at a cost of £27,000 including a contribution of £11,000 from Great Places.
Local families asked for the refurbishment and helped to plan and helped to plan it in consultation sessions. Marianne
Hodgkinson, playbuilder lead and technical officer for play areas at the council worked hard to make the plans a reality, alongside Marylyn Kerby and Cllrs Olivia Hunter and David Heffernan.
Guy Cresswell, director of housing for Great Places Housing Group, said: “We’re delighted to have worked with our partners to bring this great play area to the neighbourhood.”
Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing on Cheshire East Council, said: “This is a great example of how Cheshire East is working with others to improve community life.
“The play area is looking good and the facilities are of a high standard. I hope children and their families will enjoy it for years to come.”
The play area is the second to be completed in the neighbourhood. It follows an adventure playground for older children opposite Longridge Industrial Estate, finished last year. Now a new football pitch is planned.
Great Places owns and manages more than 300 homes at Longridge and Shaw Heath and runs many community development initiatives in the area.
