Horse racing great to judge at the Cheshire Show

By on April 6, 2011

THE first woman to train a Grand National winner will judge a prestigious competition for young riders at this year’s Cheshire County Show.

Jenny Pitman – who won with Corbiere in 1983 – will judge the Lord Leverhulme Gold Cup, which is contested by riders aged between 14 and 25 on the Tabley showground.

It will be her first time at the county show, which attracted a record-breaking number of visitors last year.

Jenny is a passionate supporter of the show’s values having grown up as part of a farming family in Leicestershire and believes the two-day event plays a vital role in promoting the lifestyle.

“It is really important the public understands and has a connection to the countryside because we all enjoy it and it shouldn’t be taken for granted,” she said. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication from farmers and landowners to maintain splendid scenery and animals we see in places like Cheshire.”

Jenny will be judging the Lord Leverhulme Gold Cup, which is awarded for style and performance, on Wednesday, June 22.

She was the first woman to train a Grand National winner, a prize she claimed twice amongst a host of successes during her illustrious training career from 1975 to 1999.

Since her retirement from race horse training in 1999, Jenny has become an acclaimed novel writer and also regularly attends rural events up and down the country to judge horse competitions, champion the countryside and promote animal welfare.

“I’ve never been busier than I am now but as long as I am around horses I’m more than happy,” she said.

“I love the opportunity to see the horses up close and meet riders competing at shows, particularly the younger generation, and if I can offer any support to them I will do. I am delighted to be judging at such a popular and well respected county show in such a lovely area of the world as Cheshire.”
