Grove Park joined many other streets in Knutsford and across Britain in holding a street party to celebrate the royal wedding on Friday.

Around 150 residents spent an enjoyable afternoon in the spring sunshine, trying in vain to make their way through the impressive buffet to which all had contributed. A cardboard cut-out of the happy couple overlooked the proceedings and, at some time in the mid-afternoon, the likeness was serenaded with a verse of “God Save the Queen” from the assembled crowd.

Regardless of one’s views about the role of the monarchy in modern society, this was an excuse to get together with your neighbours and perhaps the most important aspect of the event was the sense of community it engendered.

In the pursuit of our busy lives, many people lack opportunities to interact with the people they share a postcode with and, although Grove Park is relatively close knit by modern standards, there were plenty of new friendships forged over the trestle tables.

The organising committee had much to be proud of and as the last few guests drifted off at around 8pm, all the talk was of when the next street party could be.
