Magical Moo-ment for new Mums!

By on May 28, 2011

Two new mums at Tatton’s Home Farm are tickled pink-ish with their new babies!

On May 14 ‘Ursula’ a Red Poll cow calved a female heifer called ‘Tatton Yarrow.’ The day before, Friday, May 13, was lucky for another Home Farm resident as ‘Sugar’ a Red Dexter cow had a beautiful male calf called, appropriately enough, ‘Lucky’.

These two new calves are extremely welcome additions to the Home Farm family. The farm prides itself on its commitment to the breeding and promotion of Britain’s rare breed animals and these calves are significant to the future of the farm’s breeding programme.

Tatton Yarrow is the very first ‘grand-child’ of Rosie a Red Poll who is a firm favourite with visitors.

Lucky is Sugar’s second calf and only the second Red Dexter born at Tatton’s rare breed farm.

Dexters are one of the smallest of European cattle breeds, originating from south-western Ireland. Dexters are a ‘dual purpose’ breed (used for both milk and meat) and come in three colours: black, dun and red, such as those at Tatton.

Dexters were introduced to England in the late 19th century and, after a significant slump in their numbers during the mid to late 20th century, are now beginning to re-establish themselves as a popular breed, partly due to their unusual size – the adults stand approximately one metre at the shoulder.

Lucky is about the size of a Labrador at the moment, and won’t be getting much taller! He is currently a gorgeous cinnamon/butterscotch colour but will steadily turn more russet red, like his mother.

Farm manager Jayne Chapman said: “We are delighted to have two beautiful, healthy new calves. The calves and their mums are all stabled together, so it is nice and companionable for them.  Soon they should be joined by another calf as Red Poll Scarlett, is already one week overdue!”
