Local apprenticeship; A cut above

By on March 6, 2014

With it being national apprenticeship week we decided to talk to someone with some knowledge in this area.

Gareth West who trained under an apprenticeship scheme here in Knutsford and went on to being named London Hairdresser of the year and Men’s Hairdresser of the year, and who now owns a salon here in king street Knutsford, where he trains up and coming hairdressing stylist stars of the future under an apprenticeship scheme in partnership with go smart ltd.

We asked him what’s the difference from learning in college to learning on the job? The difference is you’ll learn more current skills on the job, also how to really deal with clients/ members of the public on a daily basis.

In a college they tend to teach older techniques rather than the current skills used by hairdressers working in the trade, as the teachers/lecturers tend to not be working in a salon or in some cases may never have, so passing on skills that are outdated. It’s a great place for teenagers to mess around with there friends for another 2 years instead of moving into the work place, where they’ll really learn true life skills for the job and life.

Why did you choose hairdressing ? Well that’s a good question , I was always top in my year in art and grew up in a service environment , so was very used to being around people , I wanted to be able to combine these areas, knowing that it wasn’t a good idea for me to go on to university as I’d probably just go for the fun of it.

I knew I needed a trade of some sort and as my mum had been a hairdresser I had a little background knowledge in it. So that’s how and why.

If there’s anybody interested in apprenticeships and hairdressing, Gareth is always on the look out for apprentices, so if you’d like to enter the world of hairdressing.

Why not send your C.V to gareth@garethwest.co.uk or if you’d like to discuss anything about jobs in hairdressing or hair problems ie styling queries you can always ask him through Facebook- garethwest hairdressing or twitter @GarethWestHair.
