Egerton were desperately unlucky to be knocked out of the District Cup.

Egerton had started the game strongly with Clawson blasting the ball over during a goalmouth scramble.

The strong cross field wind kept the ball pinned to one side of the pitch as Egerton dominated in midfield with Downing and Mountney prominent. Weatherby showed great poise to wrong foot the Vale defence before slotting the ball home for a deserved lead.

With McGrath driving down the right and Wilson’s pace, Egerton were a constant threat. Robinson’s fine cross was met at the back post with Weatherby’s accurate header leaving the keeper no chance. Two nil up and Egerton were coasting.

Vale responded well in the second half and came at Egerton hard. The Egerton defence held up well with Dunham and Ambage winning everything in the centre. Stanton had an inspirational game, battling away against constant provocation. Egerton seemed to weather the storm and Clayborough and Williams came on to add fresh legs on the flanks. A mix up in defence left Lasham out of position and Vale chipped the stranded keeper to pull a goal back.

Egerton responded and refused to allow Vale any control. Man of the match Weatherby dominated in midfield with a string of thumping tackles. Moore broke through only for the keeper to save bravely. A well earned win seemed on the cards before the decisive final minute.

Into extra time, the Egerton players struggled to overcome their sense of injustice. Downing in a strong performance against his old club, kept prompting attacks, feeding Wall and the impressive Wilson. Egerton laid siege to the Vale goal, but two breakaway caught Egerton cold and Vale snatched the victory.
