Knutsford go down to League leaders on the Isle of Man

By on January 18, 2010

The game started at a frantic pace, and Ramsey were first on the score sheet after Knutsford gave away a penalty in a kickable position and the Ramsey fly-half made no mistake in converting the opportunity. Ramsey then increased their lead with a converted try after some good work from their backs.

Knutsford then came back into the game and were the dominant team for the rest of the half. The pressure exerted eventually told, when captain Mooney won a penalty and then converted the 3 points.

Knutsford continued to pressure, but then suffered a blow just short of half time when they lost Mooney to a knee injury and also hooker Kemp.

Half Time Ramsey 13 Knutsford 3

Knutsford started the second half strongly, and could have closed the gap with a penalty in front of the posts but with regular kicker Mooney off, Walker’s attempt was well short of the posts. With the travelling side continuing to press, Knutsford suffered a killer punch when Ramsey scored under the posts off an interception after the Ramsey backs had pressed high in defence. Knutsford’s woes were further compounded when in the space of a couple of minutes Ramsey scored another breakaway try and Knutsford lost centre Lindsay to a serious ankle injury. All at the club wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Despite being down to 14 players, the away side continued to press, and were rewarded with a terrific try. A steal from Robertson in the pack set the ball up for the backline. The ball was fired out along the line, going through no fewer than 4 sets of hands before Walker finished off in the corner.

The numbers advantage, alongside some questionable refereeing decisions saw Ramsey finish with a couple more breakaway tries, one of which was converted to put the game well out of reach.

Overall, this was a good game of rugby to watch. Ramsey are a well drilled side and deservedly sit at the top of the league. Knutsford Rugby Club would like to thank Ramsey Rugby Club for their kind hospitality on the club’s first trip to the Island.
