Knutsford 2’s record a convincing win
Other than bolstering the front row with 2 debutants and the returning Maxwell slotting into the backs, the side remained the same.
From the kick off the team utilised last weeks tackling practice on the Congleton pack whose route one game plan was obvious from the off.
The first ten minutes saw a more positive Knutsford show a return to form, with some strong running up front and some good backs handling ending with a Clawson try under the posts.
Up front Bentham and Baxter did not falter with a succession of strong runs up the field, and with great support from Lee and Fuller they set a great platform. This allowed out-half Blake to break the line with one of his many strong runs of the game and he duly offloaded to Edmonds for another score under the posts. The first half continued with similar solid defensive work, only cracking once for a Congleton score. Before the half was out the Knutsford attack proved too strong again twice. Firstly, an impressive Angus Crawford got a try under the posts after linking well with Maxwell. Then the half ended with another try to Knutsford after Edmonds sprinted the length of the pitch to run in his second.
Half Time Congleton 10 Knutsford 24
The second half continued with more Knutsford pressure, particularly from the experienced players of Siwek, McGuinness and Rowsell. Congleton didn’t tire and their strong runners tested the Knutsford line but Spinola and Foord closed them down well and Blake put in some huge hits which are already becoming a trademark of his game. The Knutsford set piece was improved massively with the new front rowers dominating the scrum and Irvine and Baxter controlling the lineout well. The improved lineout set up Edmonds for his third of the day and Clawson and Crawford continued their outstanding performances with great individual tries putting the Knutsford score to 52 points, 25 of these belonging to Clawson! Knutsford got over excited with the scoreline and let their guards down with the last 5 minutes seeing Congleton get 2 scores albeit not affecting the outcome, with the final whistle ending Congletong 20 – 52 Knutsford.
With two hat tricks of tries and most of the team playing their best individual games so far this year Man of the Match was awarded to Angus Crawford and Tommy Blake for orchestrating the backs attack with special mentions to Fuller who played his first 80 at flank and of course Clawson with a remarkable 25 points. With the same team available for next week Knutsford 2’s will look to carry on this turn in form at home to Didsbury 4. All support is welcome.
