Matt Egan, Sous Chef at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa celebrated winning the final of the We Love Cheshire Sous Chef Challenge this weekend.
Having been chosen as one of 14 chefs from the Cheshire area to compete, Matt was one of just four taken through to battle it out in the final round at the Chester Food & Drink Festival on Sunday.
Tasked with producing a locally sourced dish within 40 minutes, and judged by Masterchef star Gregg Wallace and Harthill Cookery School supremo Brian Mellor, Matt was put through his paces to create his final dish, a gourmet Chicken Caesar Salad in front of over 300 spectators.
We Love Cheshire owner and sponsor of the competition, Izzy Grey said that the competition was ‘something special for the unsung heroes of the Kitchen’.
“We wanted to create a competition that would excite all those in the Restaurants and pubs of Cheshire, and the people below Head Chef who make things happen night after night. The standard was simply amazing.”
Executive Head Chef, Mark Walker who also performed on the festival’s demo stage showcasing some of the very best of Browns Restaurant at The Mere, said;
“I’m extremely proud of Matt. An exceptionally talented chef with a passion for food and an eye for presentation. This has been a great experience to showcase to the rest of the county, the talents we see in him every day.”
Matt’s co-finalists included Joe Stock who cooks at Common Hall Social, Adam Williams from Upstairs at the Grill and Steven Reddy from The Olde Lion.
James Holden of the Academy of Culinary Arts judged the previous rounds and commented;
