Rural success for Cheshire Police

By on July 10, 2009

PC Dawber had seen the real need to communicate with rural communities in order to prevent as well as detect rural crime.

Ruralwatch is similar to the successfulHomewatch schemes that are already in operation, however, the Ruralwatch scheme is specific to farms, dairies, stables and remote rural dwellings. The Knutsford Ruralwatch currently has in excess of 150 members on an email database. The members of the database receive appeals for information and good news stories. The database is also used as an early warning system to alert members to any rural crime patterns.

The early warning system has recently been extended. Messages are sent to the National Farmers Union who in turn forward the information via text to over 100 farmers around the area. During the last six months alone, the Knutsford Ruralwatch have recovered £150,000 worth of stolen property from the rural areas of Knutsford.

Recent successes include the recovery of 24 rare prize chickens worth over £2,000 stolen during a burglary and the subsequent arrest of the offender. Only a few weeks ago two horse boxes were stolen from Mere. A bulletin was sent out and consequently one of the horseboxes was recovered in Sale and returned to it’s owner – all within 24 hours.
