Ladies seek Division title

By on March 2, 2009

Knutsford ladies first team made the short trip to Chester on Saturday hoping to maintain their push for the Cheshire Womens League Divison 3 Title. With Captain Locke at the helm the visitors began well creating a number of chances early on and put the Home teams goal under increasing pressure.

The breakthrough was sure to come and with about 20 minutes played Nat Riley managed to break the dogged defence of Chester and hit a fizzer of a shot, low to the left corner of the goal. This seemed to be the catalyst that Knutsford needed and with 5 minutes to go they were awarded a penalty corner which saw the effervescent Allan step up and cream a a thunderous shot into the Chester goal following a well worked routine, this saw the visitors go in at half time 2 goals to the good with expectations of increasing the lead in the second half.

Knutsford continued the second half in the same fashion as they had finished the first. The passing on occasions was sublime and the watching spectators could have been misled that they were watching the Brazilians as it really was that good. One of theses moves involved up to 20 passes with the ball being moved all over the park and ending up with the unmarked Locke roofing the ball past the courageous Chester keeper.

The Knutsford outfit continued to produce hockey of a stunning standard and it was probably the fourth goal that demonstrated the determination that they have shown all season with the tireless Paton who had not stopped running all afternoon ending up with the ball at her feet and produced a deft “dink” to send the Chester keeper the wrong way. The points were surely now Knutsfords and they were able to relax and take their foot of the gas. It was with 5 minutes to go that Allan made it 5, another well worked move from defence to attack saw her drag flicking a stunning goal to cap of what was an exceptional all round team performance by the Knutsford ladies. Special mention should go to Marsham for another clean sheet and the tenacious Orchard who well deserved her man of the match.

The result saw Knutsford maintain their lead at the top of the division and with 3 games to go it is all for the Knutsford Ladies to throw it away. Lets hope that the Galleon that Captain Locke continues to steer has enough wind to get them over the finishing line first.
