Knutsford in to Division One!

Knutsford Ladies 1’s will play in Cheshire’s top division next season despite a 2 – 1 defeat against League winner Neston. In their penultimate game of the season the ladies knew they were only a point away from promotion if rivals Chester managed a victory against neighbours Bowdon.

After being beat convincingly by Neston earlier in the season ( a 7 -1 drubbing) the girls could have gone into the game thinking “damage limitations” to protect their goal difference. But so typical of Knutsford this season, they went in to the game positively thinking they could get something. The game was a perfect example of what division one may be like next season with both teams putting in a sterling performance. Neston broke the dead lock first with a fine finish from a well worked short corner routine. The visitors looked to extend their lead minutes later when a ball flashed agonisingly close across goal and wide. However, Knutsford proved they were in no mood to play dead and revitalised their play with some great attacking moves. 4 Short corners went close, but the girls went into half time a goal down. The second half was much of the same for both teams, yet Knutsford were the first to strike back. The short corner that has served the team so well this year was struck by Sarah Fielding and brilliantly deflected in by Girl of the Game Kate Edminson. Edminson was everywhere for Knutsford, supporting the defence and creating some clever attacking moves for her side. But a slight lapse in concentration for the home side meant Neston crept through the otherwise solid defence and clinched the winner. Knutsford came close to equalising at the death with a great one two movement between Lucy Wright and Nat Riley but the ball deflected wide, with Heather Paton coming agonisingly close to tapping in after a great run to the far post. Shouts of “Chester have lost” could be heard from the side lines with minutes left by the Knutsford faithful. The final whistle blew and both sides walked away knowing next time they’d face each other it would be in Division One. Knutsford face Bowdon next week at home for their final game of the season and it’s sure to be a cracking game!
