New Northwich exhibition and calendar captures town’s vibrancy and beauty from 27 November at the Lion Salt Works Museum in Northwich
On Tuesday 27 November, an exhibition of the twelve pictures featured in this year’s Visual Arts Cheshire 2019 calendar will go on display at the award-winning Lion Salt Works Museum in Northwich, until 17 February. The calendar, featuring Northwich scenes by locally-based artists, was previewed at a launched on Saturday 24 November. Normal admission charges for the museum apply. The 2019 calendar, which is the sixth in the series, costs £5 and is available in the Museum’s shop as well as from mid-November in the Northwich Art Shop, Weaver Hall Museum, Northwich Library and Northwich Information Centre. Alternatively, online orders can be made at www.danarts.co.uk
The exhibition, being held in conjunction with the DAN Community and Northwich Art Shop, reproduces 12 original paintings from artists who live and work in Northwich and the surrounding area. The images capture the vibrancy of the town centre, some of its historical sites, such as the Anderton Boat Lift, Lion Salt Works Museum and Town Bridge, as well as some of the stunning scenery and waterways in the area. The ten artists comprise professional artists and highly talented amateurs whose work shows their love of Northwich.
Alan Carr, Chairman, Visual Arts Cheshire, said: “Northwich has so much to offer and the paintings are a lovely way to show off our town. Each year, the calendar – which represents great value at only £5 – becomes more popular. It is a great present for friends and family living locally as well as those who have moved away from the area. We are delighted that the paintings will be shown as large prints at the historic Lion Salt Works Museum and hope that as in previous years, the calendar will be a sell-out.”
Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing at Cheshire West and Chester Council, said; “This is a wonderful initiative. Northwich is a town with drive and passion; it is distinctive with its black and white buildings and it has outstanding woodlands and waterways. It also has nationally-significant historic sites like the Lion Salt Works Museum and the Anderton Boat Lift, which are both Scheduled Ancient Monuments with the same protection status as Stonehenge. There is so much to celebrate and this is an imaginative and creative way of showcasing the town.”
Patricia Kelsall, an art teacher from Hartford, Northwich, who has contributed two pictures this year, including said: “The paintings I have contributed to this year’s calendar capture the vibrancy and energy of the people of the town. In a world where town centres can be uninspiring and very similar, I hope my pictures convey the sense of community and the striking features of the town that it make it such a distinctive and a great place to live.”
The Lion Salt Works Museum tells the story of salt through interactive displays, including a sound and light show, automaton and ‘subsiding house’. It has won nine prestigious awards since re-opening after a four-year £10m restoration in June 2015.
