Appeal for information following ATM gas attack in Macclesfield

By on January 7, 2019

Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward after offenders targeted a cash machine in Macclesfield.

At around 11.50pm on Saturday 5 January 2019 a grey Ford Focus ST or RS sports model stopped outside the Co-op bank on Castle Street.

Three to four men – all wearing dark clothing – got out of the vehicle and attacked a cash machine outside the bank, using a gas to blow up the machine causing an explosion and large bang.

The men then forced entry into the building and stole a large quantity of cash; they then got back into the car and drove off in the direction of Churchill Way.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and officers are keen to hear from anyone with any information which may assist their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Angela Coppock, from Macclesfield CID, said: “This was a serious incident and we are committed to doing all that we can to trace the people responsible and bring them to justice.”

“The investigation is currently ongoing and we’re following a number of lines of enquiry, including CCTV and forensics.”

“As part of the investigation I’m keen to hear from anyone with any information about the incident.”

“I’m particularly keen to locate two members of the public who we’re seen in the vicinity of the bank immediately prior to the incident.”

“I’d also like to hear from anyone who believes they have any dashcam footage of the grey Ford Focus, which is believed to have travelled around the town centre between 11:40pm and 11.59pm.”
