Return of the Rag Tag Army!: Tatton’s Scarecrow Festival

By on February 6, 2010

From Saturday 13th to Sunday 21st February 2010 (closed Monday 15th), the fabulous annual Scarecrow Festival returns to the gardens at this historic estate.

Visitors will be able to meet a rag-tag army of scarecrows made by Tatton’s Chief Scarecrow and our very own gardening team.   In previous years adventurous scarecrows have been spotted climbing up trees, heading underground hunting for moles and in many other nooks and crannies in the gardens.  Visit us this half term to see what the scarecrows are getting up to this year!

Sam Youd, Gardens Manager commented “it’s really important for us to protect our tender crops and fledgling flowers at this time of year.  Tatton’s scarecrows do a great job of scaring away the birds and the garden staff have great fun making them!”

Throughout the week children can take part in the Scarecrows Quiz to find out where the naughty squirrels have hidden some of the Scarecrow Gardeners’ tools.  On Saturday 20th February children will also be able to take part in a special day of additional games and activities.  They will be able to help Tatton’s Chief Scarecrow, Janet Bradshaw, make and dress more bird-botherers for the Gardens and see traditional and modern ways of scaring away birds.  Visitors are invited to bring some old clothes with them and see them modelled on our new scarecrows.

Sam commented “this is a lovely event for us, so do come along during the week to take part in the quiz and see our scarecrows and why not visit again on 20th to join in with some extra games and activities!”
