Magic Mooment for Tatton Violet!

By on June 28, 2010

One year old Tatton Violet won firstly her class (against cows of a similar age) and finally, to top it all, was awarded the title ‘Champion Rare Breed’.  This fantastic award saw her beating all rare breed cattle, of any class and age group.  This is the second year running that a Home Farm Red Poll has won this award – the rosette was awarded to Tatton Tansy in 2009.

Violet was not the only Home Farm winner at the annual county show, held near Tabley on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd June. Tatton Tulip, a Red Poll cow (shown with her calf Tatton Willow Sage) came first in her class and was then awarded ‘Reserve Champion Breed’, second only to Violet!

The Farm’s rare breed poultry were entered into the championship poultry competition for the very first time.  They delighted staff by winning 1st prize for Best Coloured Call Duck, 2nd for Best Cumberland Blue Indian Runner Duck and 3rd for a large Buff Orpington cock.

The beautiful Clydesdale horses showed off their skill and agility in ridden demonstrations to music by Glen Miller.  They also competed in the Ridden Heavy Horse class and, out of nine entries, Finn came 2nd for the third year in a row and Blue took 4th place.  Finn will be chomping at the bit to win first prize next year!

Home Farm is one of many attractions at Tatton Park, in Cheshire East, which was recently awarded Cheshire’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year for the second year in a row.  The Farm received Rare Breed Accreditation Status in 2007 for its commitment to conserving and promoting rare breeds.

Jayne Chapman, Farm Manager commented “The Cheshire Show is a fabulous opportunity for us to showcase our wonderful rare breeds.  We love sharing our enthusiasm for Home Farm livestock with the public and to win awards for them is even better! We can’t believe we got Rare Breed Champion for the second year running – we’re all over the moon with Tatton Violet!”
