Introducing: The World Famous Roberts Bakery Band!
The World Famous Roberts Bakery Band to perform at Knutsford Methodist Church in aid of the Royal British Legion On Saturday 20th November the Roberts Bakery Band will present an evening of traditional brass band music at Knutsford Methodist Church, Princess Street.
The concert will commence at 7:30pm. Tickets are £7, available in advance from John Walker 01925-820744 or on the door on the night. The concert is in aid of the Royal British Legion.
The band’s press officer Tom Hancock said:
“The band is very much looking forward to the evening. It is always a pleasure to perform in Knutsford and for such a wonderful charity. It is perhaps fitting that we perform this concert so soon after Remembrance Sunday, and we may even throw in a patriotic item or two!”
The band, now based in Sandbach, South Cheshire, were formed from Middlewich Town Band after gaining the sponsorship of the Northwich-based bakery in 1980. They are widely renowned as one of the most entertaining concert brass bands in the United Kingdom. In recent years this reputation has spread overseas.
The band are the headline act at the annual European Blasmusikfestival in Germany, the leading brass and wind music festival of it’s type, where they perform to audiences in excess of six thousand people. The band were crowned First Section Champions of the North West Area in 2008 and now compete at Championship Section level against the very best bands in the country. The band’s Musical Director is Colin Cranson, the former Euphonium soloist of the Fodens Band, who has conducted the band for 38 years – an achievement in its own right.
A special CD recording is planned in 2012, to celebrate Colin’s 40th year with the band. The concert programme on November 20th includes many popular items such as Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York’ and music by 1940s band leader Glenn Miller. It also features the band’s star flugel horn player Sara Oberland, who will perform Rodrigo’s ‘Concerto de Aranjuez’ (which featured in the hit movie Brassed Off) and for the first time as a soloist, 15-year-old Cornet player Wilson Taylor, a star musician of the future.
