Knutsford residents unite to organise major triathlon
Inspired by their shared passion of this triple discipline sport; swim, bike, run and by the lack of opportunities in the region to compete against each other they decided to join forces to organise The Salford Triathlon especially since The Tatton Triathlon is unlikely to continue.
It will be the first time in six years that a triathlon has been hosted in Salford Quays and it will take place on the site of the iconic MediaCity UK – the new home of BBC Sport.
Robin and James are expecting 1,000 athletes including members of the Knutsford Tri Club to tackle the spectacular course on 18 August entailing the Olympic distance of; a 1,500m swim in Dock 9, 40km bike ride and 10km waterfront run around Salford Quays. The ‘sprint’ distance is half these distances.
Robin said: “Triathlon is one of the fastest growing mass participation sports in the UK and in Knutsford we have a strong following for this fantastic and sociable sport. We have great, natural open water swim locations up the road at Boundary Water Park which attracted nearly 300 swimmers a week last year and fantastic cycle routes, which many of the Olympians have used as their training ground. Unfortunately we’ve lacked opportunities in the region to put our hard training in to practice, so we decided to make it happen ourselves.”
James added: “It will be a fast, flat course and competitors will be able to enjoy the stunning backdrop of MediaCityUK. For those who just want to tackle one leg of the race, relay teams can also enter. We’re expecting it to be a sell-out.”
