Creative play secures an Egerton victory
The first half was scrappy with both teams unwilling to give ground. Mountney organised the defence with Dunham strong in the air.
Robinson linked well with Clayborough on the left as Egerton dominated but were unable to turn possession into goal chances. With Stanton creating space on the right, Egerton won a series of free kicks and corners but didn’t trouble the Witton keeper.
A fast break caught Egerton out and with a superb touch the Villa striker controlled the ball and fired home. Ambage and Downing passed the ball well as Egerton refused to lie down.
In the second half, Egerton turned their creative play into goal threats. First Williams coolly controlled a pass before lashing it against the bar, for Clawson to knock in the rebound. Minutes later Wilson’s header released Clawson who rounded the keeper to give Egerton the lead to round off a spell with Egerton in complete control.
The team relaxed only to be caught cold by Witton who ran through too easily to level the scores. Egerton were not to be denied as Weatherby’s towering header was touched onto the bar by the keeper. Williams cool head meant Egerton held onto the ball more easily than the frenetic first half as Egerton piled forwards.
The pressure told as McGrath forced the keeper to palm the ball out from a corner and hat trick hero Clawson thrashed home the winner. Witton threw everything at Egerton but in goal Lasham was composed as he caught several balls pumped into the box to see the team through to the semi-finals.
